DREAM-CASTLE
By ELSA FLAVELL, 49 Wilson Street, Hawera Aged 17 years. How did 1 come, a sword in hand, Upon this little hill? How did that castle come to stand On that high peak, so still? It was but now, beneath a tree I sat. in a little vale; While my mother softly told to me A beautiful fairy-tale. A tale of gallant knights of old, Of princesses, wizards and fays; And wondrous deed, she did unfold, And 1 listened in amaze. Then, when the tale was ended, I On the furass in silence lay; And swift my tranced thoughts did fly . fn fancy's realms away. But how did I come to be standing here Above this vale of trees, While the sound of its torrent comes to my ear Like the buzz of a million bees? And how did that castle corrfe to stand On that steep, lofty height, With its pennant floating, a crimson band, In the blue sky's moveless lightP Is there a princess in that tower, Kept prisoner, night and day, Awaiting a knight of magic power To rescue and bear her away? Surely adventure me awaits—!«'or see, 1 hold a sword; Soon shall 1 knock at the castle gate, Where the wicked witch keeps ward! Then 1 shall slay the wicked dame. (And the ugly ogre, too): And the hand of the princess I shall claim (Her eyes will be bright sky-blue.) And we shall be wed —but oh, but oh; There's the river vet to ford; And the height to climb, and the sun grows low — And the wicked witch keeps ward! Oh, how did I really come to be On this hill? How strange it seems! Perhaps a fairy wafted me — Perhaps her name was Dreams.
