STOCK ROUTE SCHEME
WAIKATO TO WESTFI ELD DISCUSSION AT OTAHUHU Reference to the fact that the Otahuhu Borough Council was not represented at the recent conference held at Papakura to discuss the question of providing a special stock route between the Waikato and the Westfield saleyards and freezing works was made at a meeting of the council on Thursday. Mr. -T. J. Graham said ho considered Otahuhu had been slighted in not being invited to attend the conference. It was vitally interested, as all southern stock passed through the borough. A practical solution to the difficulty was tiie erection of a bridge over the Tamaki River on the eastern side of Otahuhu. All stock would, thus be diverted to the saleyards via Portage Road. Otahuhu would benefit from such a project, as the long approaches to the bridgo could be made into holding tanks for sewage. Also, the bridge could be so constructed that it would form a basin which would provide an ideal bathing place and eliminate all question of constructing swimming baths. Mr. A. Sinclair said Otahuhu was the bottle-neck to the saleyards from the south. He thought the formation of a special stock route would bo detrimental to Otahuhu's roads and footpaths and also to tho revenue of the Railway Department. A road would be an inducement for increased driving. The Mayor, Mr. C. R. Petrie, said there would have to be enabling legislation passed before anything was done. Ho would take steps to see that Otahuhu was represented at any future conference.
