EPSTEIN STATUES
PROPOSED REMOVAL OWNERS STRONGLY CRITICISED LONDON. May 27 The Manchester Guardian publishes a lengthy illustrated article in which it criticises the offer by the Government of Southern Rhodesia to sell two Epstein statues to Australian art galleries It says: "The Rhodesian Government has said little to extenuate the amazing offer,, except that the statues were too high to bo properly seen, and that it does not consider them suitable for its offices. "Such destruction will be unthinkable a few years hence. The statues are only slightly damaged by the weather, and cannot be removed except by cutting up a granite wall, resulting almost certainly in breaking them. "The youth of Epstein lives in these powerfully-imagined and brilliantlyexecuted figures." "It is criminal and ridiculous to dish out these sculptures like pieces of cake," said Mr. Epstein when referring to tho proposal of the Rhodesian Government*
