TRADE WITH CANADA
AGREEMENT EXTENDED REVISION NOT YET MADE [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Tuesday It was announced to-day by the acting-Minister of Finance, the Hon. A. Hamilton, that, by mutual agreement between the Governments of Canada and New Zealand, it had been decided to extend the existing trade agreement between the two Dominions for a further period of six months from May 24. The agreement was originally brought into operation on May 24, 1932, and was to remain in force for one year. It has been extended from time to time. It was expected that a new agreement would have been entered into after the recent revision of the New Zealand customs tariff, but the domestic affairs of both countries have not permitted this to be carried out. It is the desire of both Governments that a new agreement should be concluded as early as possible, and no doubt this will be effected as soon as circumstances permit. Under the existing agreement, the value of New Zealand products exported to Canada has been:—l93l, £222.942; 1932, £208,315; 1933, £433,861; 1934, £554,931. During the same periods the value in sterling of Canadian goods imported into New Zealand was £1,224,569, £1,007,096, £1*012,213 and £1,677,764 for the respective years.
