THE CITY MARKETS

HEAVY VEGETABLE SUPPLIES SEVERAL LINES CHEAPER Tomatoes continued to sell freely at the City Markets yesterday, but supplies of outdoor varieties are rapidly diminishing, and glasshouse-grown are now taking their place. Passion fruit were in short supply and realised high prices. The season for persimmons is now practically finished. The demand for Fiji mandarins was not very keen, although the fruit was of good quality and very sweet. There was again a fairly good demand for hothouse Colman grapes, which have sold well throughout the season. Cooking apples were in good demand, as were dessert apples and pears, but lemons were dull of sale. There were heavy supplies of all vegetables, several lines, especially lettuce, being very cheap. Cauliflower, most of which is now coming from Ohakune, brought high prices, but cabbages eased slightly in price. Carrots were also cheap, and there was a glut of kumaras. Peas and beans are becoming very scarce and good quality sorts realised high prices. Hothouse beans are now appearing on the market, and supplies of Brussels sprouts arrived from Ohakune. With the arrival of Southern potatoes, the market weakened considerably. The supply of poultry was heavy and the demand fair. Values remained practically unchanged.
