HOCKEY CONTESTS

SECOND SERIES OPENS SOMERVILLE PLAYS DRAW WESLEY DEFEATS ST. LUKE'S Tho second series of the Auckland Hockey Association's championship matches, played at Remuera on Saturday, was characterised by fast and strenuous hockey. With the exception of the game between Grammar Old Boys and Mount Eden the senior matches were well balanced. The match between Somerville and University was fast and open and the University team, after its indifferent showing last week, caused a surprise by drawing with last year's champions. The Wesley-St. Luke's game also was of interest, tho former team securing a hard-lought win. Grammar Old Boys had little difficulty in beating Mount Eden, which was making its first appearance in the senior grade. Following were the scores in the senior games:— Somerville, 4; University, 4. Wesley, 2; St. Luke's, 1. Grammar Old Boys, 9; Mount Eden, 2. HARD-FOUGHT GAME SOMERVILLE AND UNIVERSITY _ University made a splendid stand against Somervillo. A far better understanding existed between the forwards than that of last week and both at the commencing and concluding etages of the game Somerville was hard pressed. From the bully the University forwards took up tho attack, but the ball went behind. They maintained the pressure and with the exception of two rallies by the forwards play remained in Somerville'e balf of the field for the first 20 minutes of the game. A nice run by Wellbourne put Somerville on the attack, but a. penalty to University eased the position. A good run by A. Broun took play to Somerville'e goal, but an infringement saved when Fraser was in a likely position. From a penalty E. Wattß made a good run and passed to C. Watts, who made a clean shot to secure the first score. Both teams made determined attacks, but solid defence prevented any scores. From a 25 yards bully the Somerville forwards pressed hard and a scoop shot by C. Watts went just over the bar. University then took up the attack and A. Broun netted, but the goal was not allowed. Play went from goal to goal, but half-time wa9 called without any further scoring. Soon after the resumption of play University took up the attack and from a melee in the goal-mouth Cooper netted. Hogben sent his forwards away and a shot from Bennett was stopped by Delahunty. CWatts made a good run. but Robinson cleared with a strong shot. Somerville maintained the pressure and E. Watt 6 goaled from the edge of the circle. From a penalty corner C. Watts made a fine shot to register Somerville'e third goal. Good defensive work by Robinson stopped a likely movement by the Watts brothers and University attacked. EL Watts broke away, but Robinson cleared trom the goal-month. The University forwards pressed and Bennett netted with a beautiful Bhot from the edge of the circle. Somerville rallied and Wellbourne scored from an accurate pass from E. Watts. From a long corner Watson made a fine shot, which Delahunty had no chance of stopping. University still kept up the pressure and Fraser narrowly missed with a shot across the goal. WIN FOR WESLEY

ST. LUKE'S FINE SHOWING

Bright hockey was witnessed in the game between Wesley and St. Luke's. A draw would have been a fairer result to the match, as both teams made determined attacks, and were unfortunate in not securing more goals. Wesley reached the circle in the first few minutes of play, but a penalty gave St. Luke's an opportunity to work up the field. Play moved from end to end fairly rapidly until Wesley gained a corner, but St. Luke's broke e'ear. A penalty for St. Luke's sent play to Wesley's half. The forwards pressed hard, but good work by Burton and Surtnan relieved temporarily. However, St. Luke's rallied, for Vipond to score from the edge of +ne circle directly in front of the goal. St. Luke's immediately resumed the attack, but Wesley worked down the field, only to lose two opportunities through infringements in the circle. Corin made a good run. but Airey saved at the expense of an unsuccessful corner. St. Luke's made several further sallies down the left, but Surmnn cleared. Wesley took up the attack and Wattam was called on to save a shot from Neate. A moment later Chapman made an unsuccessful attempt at goal. After a brief break-away by St. Luke's he returned, but Wattam ran out and kicked clear. Play went up and down the field until halftime.

Immediately after the resumption Neate secured from a roll-in and scored from in front of the goal. Brodie sent his forwards away, for Grace to shoot, but Airey saved. From a roll-in the St, Luke's forwards rushed the circle and Airey saved a shot from Vipond. Neate made two spectacular runs, both of which were stopped by Waltam, but Wesley returned, and after a scramble in the coal-mouth the ball went behind just outside the post. Pressure was maintained by the Wesley forwards and Beere netted Spurred by thiß reverse, St. Luke's attacked, but a chance waß lost by faulty shooting. St. Luke's kept on the attack and Vipond netted, but the goal was disallowed on account of an infringement. Soon after he made another attempt, which just failed. St Luke's went away in a promising movement, but Airey saved with a fine kick. Both sides pressed hard toward the end of the game. A free hit sent St. Luke's away to gain a corner, but Conn's shot missed. Play continued in front of Wesley's goal until the final whistle sounded, with the score:—Wesley, 2; St. Luke's. 1.

GRAMMAR'S EASY WIN

AN UNINSPIRING GAME In a game which seldom became interesting. Grammar Old Boys easily defeated Mount Eden by 9 goals to 2. The standard of hockey displayed by both sides was disappointing. Grammar had the better of the opening stages, and after a brief Mount Eden breakaway had been checked by Moore and Hay, Roughton went away and finished off with a splendid reverse 6hot, which Ellingworth stopped on his pads. Roughton had another unsuccessful shot before Torbet opened the score. He followed this with a difficult shot at goal, but missed Mount Eden had n short spell on attack, but Grammar returned, Twigden taking a pass from Jerrum to score. The Mount Eden forwards took the ball straight from the bully, and after tight play in the circle Clarke found the net. From play in front of the Mount Eden goal, Jones ran in to beat Ellingworth. Grammar lost several opportunities through bad shooting in a series of comers, and enabled the opposing forwards to break away in a fast run, which culminated in Millcn scoring with a hard shot. Just prior to half-time Jerram scored again. On resumption, both sides made rushes down the field from one of which Roughton had two unsuccessful shots. Twigden completed a fast run with a fine shot, and this was followed by a goal by Jones. Roughton and Twigden next went away in a run down the field, and Ellingworth stopped Roughton'B first shot, but the latter collected the rebound to goal. From a further attack Twigden lifted the ball over the bar, but soon after made amends by scoring from in front of the goal. The final score came from Torbet, who sent in a beautiful shot from a difficult angle on the right. Grammar continued to press, and several shots were missed before the whistle sounded. The final score was:—Grammar Old Boys, 9; Mount Eden, 2. Messrs. H. E. Watts and H. Rankin wore umpires. LOWER GRADE RESULTS Second Grade.—Somerville, 2, Grammar Old Boys, 1; University. 4.
