ORE FROM SYLVIA REEF ' f ' COMMENCEMENT OF CRUSHING [bt telegbaph OWN* cobbespoxdext] THAMES, Saturday The treatment of the first pardel of 50 tons of ore from the Sylvia mina was commenced at the Thames School of Mines battery on Saturday last. The battery is working two shifts daily. The Sylvia Mines Development, Ltd., commenced work twelve months ago, active developmental operations being carried on. Nos. 3 and 4 levels have been restored and retimbered where necessary and ventilation secured. Numerous samples have been taken and assayed along the line of the reef at No. 4 level, and the results have encouraged the company to continue its work. A winze is now being sunk for 120 ft. on the reef at No. 4 level where it has a continuity of over 1000 ft. with an average width of sft. It is the first ore from this winze that is now being treated at the School of Mines. Arrangements have been iriada for the disposal of the concentrates to a Sydney firm. It has been ascertained that the larger proportion of ore bodies between Nos. 4 and 5 levels, containing many thousands of tons of millable ore. is still intact and that ore below No. 5 level has not been touched. YIELDS OF COMPANIES Mossy Creek (Greymouth).—Last week, 730z. 17dwt., from 8600 yards. Maori Gully (Greymouth).—Last week 68oz. 12dwt., for 101J hours' work. NEW RIVER DREDGE A contract for the construction of a dredge costing £14,126 has been let by the directors of the New River Gold Dredging Company, Limited, to a Christchurch firm. The company, which was registered last November, has a property of 316 acres near Dueanville, in the Kumara district. West Coast. REPORTS OF MANAGERS. Mahakipawa (Marlborough). The leading face has been advanced 10ft. on a slightly rising bottom. The gutter is bearing to the left, the right hand wall having come over 4ft. in the last 6ft. The top half of the left wall has not been visible for the last 9ft., but the lower half has projected. The bottom is about 2ft. above the floor of the drive, which is being turned to follow the gutter. The wash, which is cemented in places, does not contain any values. The face is 1375 ft. south and 155 ft. west of the main shaft. Crosscut south: At a point 23ft. from the drive and 12ft. into the wall, we started to rise vertically and at 14ft. cut the wash. After rising another 6ft. the back was caught up and a drive started on the south side of the rise. This has been driven for 10ft. The wash is sandy and contains no values.
