EARLY TARANAKI DAYS DEMOLITION OF COTTAGE [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN" correspondent] NEW PLYMOUTH, Sunday Two incidents that have occurred in Taranaki recall the earliest days of the settlement in the province. One is the celebration of the diamond jubilee of the Inglewood Public School, and the other is the demolition of a cottage that was built and was occupied by Mr. H. R. Richmond, who was superintendent of- Taranaki from 1565 to 1869. Inglewood has also been celebrating the opening of a fine now openair type of school on a site some distance from that which was cleared from the dense forest 60 years ago for the original school. The demolition of the old cottage in the grounds of the Terminus Hotel severs an interesting link with the first settlement at New Plymouth. The Richmond family arrived nearly 80 years ago and built a stone cottage known as the "Stone Jug," which stands on the seafront immediately in front of the site of the old cottage which has just been demolished. The removal of the Richmond family from the "Stone Jug" to the other cottage took place when the Bank of New Zealand opened its first branch in the "Stono Jug." The cottage was subsequently used by Mr. J. C. Adams as a night school. Mr. Adams later went to Canterbury and became headmaster of the Christchurch Normal School. Subsequently ho was chairman of the Canterbury Education Board for many years. ,
