TO-DAY HAWKE'S BAY CUP CONTEST The autumn meeting of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club opens at Hastings today, the chief race being the Hawke's Bay Cup. ♦ The win and place betting system will be >in operation. Telegraphing last evening onr Hastings' correspondent stated that the weather had every appearance of remaining fine, but the going would not be fast, and so should suit the big majority of the horses engaged. The horses left Hamilton by motor transport on Wednosduy evening • Royal Gallant, who won n double nt Reefton on Thursday, was formerly raced in Auckland, where he recorded several useful performances in hack company, Royal Gallant was bred in Australia, and is a six-year-old gelding by Top Gallant from Princess Ilona. Mr. A. Lile, of New Plymouth, has not been long in getting_ a horse to replace his good jumper Illuminate, and has placed Whoa Johnny under the ehftirge of J. O'Neill. Whoa Johnny is a big well-made four-yeai'-old by Tribulation, and looks an ideal cut of a jumper.

The amateur rider Mr. W. R. Duncan, of Hunteiville, received painful injuries when he fell 30ft from a walnut tree laßt week. His back was slightly injured and he suffered from shock. Mr Duncan intended to be on one of the runners in tho Ladies' Necklace at Marton last Saturday.

Takakua, who won the Warrnambool Ciin in Victoria on Thursday, is a New Zealand bred gelding by Royal Divorce from Outlet, who registered some useful performances in the Dominion before leaving B. Burgess' stnble to join M. McOrath's team at Caulfield. Takakua laeed unsuccessfully at Ellerglie last -winter

Chile will be having his first race over country when he uontests the Egmont. Steeplechase at Hawera to-day. The Limond gelding has shown promise in his schooling efforts at Trentham, and he should he quite rarnble of jumping tho country at Hawera. which is not difficult. Chile Won recently over hurdles, and is an improver who may do well this winter.

There are some speedy beginners in the Hack Scurry at Hawera to-day, and among them are the . Aucklandem, Te Hai, Lion Heart and Queen Nona. Te Hai gave a little trouble at the post at his last start and was eventually sent to the outside after going through the tapes several times. However, he finds his feet very quickly, and with an even jump out should take a 10l of beating to-day. ""

The New Zealand-bred Wakatipn, now four years old, made a bold attempt to win the March Handicap, one mile, at a meeting in South Africa on March 1, but failed by over a length to reach the lightlyweighted six-year-old horse Matador, who was in receipt of So|b from him. Matador assisted in all the running, and racing clear in the straight he easily held off Wakatipu's challenge in the last furlong.
