Parents throughout Monmouthshire are becoming alarmed by the number of children who have lost the sight of an eye through being struck by stones Recently it was stated that there were at least 14 children in the county so afflicted, while considerably more have received eye it-juries. So serious has the danger of stone-throwing bv hand and catapult become that Newport magistrates have appealed to traders not to sell catapults to children At Newport Juvenile Court boys of under 14 are frequently charged with " unlawfully discharging missiles from catapults.'' Monmouthshire parents are agreed that steps should be taken to put an end to stone-throwing altogether Some parents believe that birching would solve the problem. Others demand that teachers in all schools should be asked to explain the dangers of the practice, pointing out that more than a dozen children in the county liave Steady lp§b the sight of ap oye.
