"For tho third successive yeaf the ordinary .department business written in New Zealand has shown a substantial increase, the total of £2,899,561 being * over £500,000 in excess of the previous year," be isaid. "Coxtpled with this lias been the greater success of our efforts, J for the conservation of the existing business, mirrendersj lapses, and! I;he cashing of bonuses all having shown substantial decreases. The resultant- increase in, business in" force has boen most gratifying. According to the latest Government returns the society holds over 41 pi:-r cent Of the life assurance business of the Dominion,| in spite of the fact, that there are 14 offices operatwhile of the total , assets of £39,816,501) invested by life offices jn the country, the society's funds account for £17,409,849. _ The increased new business in the industrial department i } is a clear indication,of the fejth plsjced in the society by those of):small incomes." ; i . ' , J'V The future for mortgage investments could be faced with equanimity, he said. Jt, had been necessary recent years to extend consideration to intimbers of mortgagors to tide them orer particularly difficult periods, and though the integrity of the funds: had necessarily been the prime consideration in such circumstances, yet, by rendering material assistance in some cases, and exercising reasonable for-? bearance in others, the society's goodwill in tho Dominion bad bfierii enhanced to a remarkable extent. The direct -outcome had been an increased inquiry for loans on broad acre i linearities. . "Speaking of the Dominion generally, the past year has been one of ac-liK've-ment," Sir William continued. Mary producers as a whole have been able to improve and consolidate their positions, retail business has recorded a more buoyant tone,, and unemployment figures have been materially reduced, resulting in a welcome deoreasa in taxation. Although fwe can as yet record only partial recovery, tb« outlook is not without promise. There is talk of levies or quotas for meat and dairy produce, and the future of wool seems to some extent, at least,! to be wrapped up with the question of reciprocal trade agreements with European countries." - i WHEAT, FLOUR AND PULSE LONDON, May* 3 Wheat.—-Cargoes are inactive and easier. Parcels are in small request. Futures.--London; June, 23s 9d n, quarter; September, 24s 3d. Liverpool: May, 5s 3jd a cental; July. 5s 6|d; October, 5s Bfd; December, 5s 91d. Spot trade sl&w.
