HISTORIC RELICS
DISCOVERY IN WELLINGTON Several interesting relics of historic, if not of monetary, value, which were unearthed during the-demolition of the old Exchange Building in Wellington last year, have come into the possession of a New Plymouth resident, Mrs. P. J. Lorell. The building was purchased for demolition by Mrs, Lovell's brother, the late Mr. C. H. Fisher, who discovered the relics while- removing the foundation stone of the building. When ihe Iblock was removed from its position ft bottle reposing in an opening left in the brick wall was revealed. Thanks to a close-fitting glass stopper the contents were found to be in a ;j>erfect state of preservation. They consisted of a statement of the constitution and purpose of the Athenaeum and Mechanics' Institute, which the building was originally called, a folded copy of the New Zealand Times of January 20, 1877, a copy of the New Zealand Mail of January 20, 1877, a copy of the. Evening Argus oi ! January 19, :i877, a copy of the Evening Post of the same date, and several coins dated 1875, including two ''liipade" guineas.
The papers are as ■well preserved as though but recently printed, \ijiile the coins, all have the appearance of having come straight from tho mint.
