HARD-COURT TOURNEY NEW ZEALANDERS DEFEATED LONDON. April 30 In the second round of the singles at the hard-court tennis championships at Bournemouth Austin beat Stedman (Now Zealand), 6 —4, 7—5, 6 ■!; Perry beat Malfroy (New Zealand), 6—4, 6—3, 6—2; Prenn beat Kirby, 6—3, 6—3, 6—l. Critics express the opinion that Perry's game has improved. In spite of Malfroy's continued attack Perry Counter-attacked, forcing his opponent into many errors. Perry was so much the master that he was able to use any shot. Austin was shaky against Stedman and trailed I—4 in the first set. The New Zealander pulled up from 2 —5 to 5—5 iu the.second set, hitting so well that Austin occasionally had only time to lob. Austin, in the third set, however, vigorously went for winners and outclassed his opponent. In the second round of the women's singles Miss Round defeated Miss Ridded 7__s ) 6—l; Miss Scriven defeated Mrs. Strawson, 6—2, 6 —2; Mrs. Hopman defeated Miss Scott, B—6,8 —6, 4 6, 6 —3. MONTE CARLO SINGLES FINAL ABANDONED MONTE CARLO. April 30 In the final of the singles at the Monte Carlo lawn tennis championships between the Australians Crawford and MeGrath the game was abandoned after each player had won two sets, to enable them to catch the tram, en route to England. The contest lasted three hours, and the score (Crawford first) was 9—ll, 6-3, 2-0, 9—7. McGrath at the " rest " was thus Leading by two sets to one.
