RACING SUCCESS

i NAVAL OFFICER'S WIN

SERVICE IN NEW ZEALAND

News has been received in Auckland that Lieutenant R. H. Courage, formerly of H.M.S. Dunedin," won the Grand Military Gold Cup at the Grand Military Race Meeting at Sandown Park, England, in March. Lieutenant Courage rode his own horse, Young Cuthbert, and it was the first occasion in the long history of the race that a naval officer had won,on his own horse. On two previous occasions a horse owned by a naval officer and a horse ridden by a naval officer but owned by a military officer have been successful.

Lieutenant Courage frequently displayed his interest in horsemanship while he was on the New Zealand station. Ho rode with the Pakuranga Hunt and took an active part in polo matches played by naval teams.
