OSTEND AFFAIRS
IMPROVED POSITION RETICULATION OF ISLAND "We may confidently look forward to the time when overdrafts will be no more," said Mr. F. H. Brown, chairman of the Ostend Road Board, at the annual meeting of ratepayers last night. "Steady progress has been made throughout the year and at no other time have the ratepayers received such benefits." The annual report stated that considerable financial responsibility had been removed from the board by the subsidy from the No. 2 Highways Board. The overdraft had been reduced by £3O, but outstanding rates were higher by £B9. Building permits for the past year totalled 15, making a value of £2IBB, compared with £1366 in 1934 and £271 in 1933. "It will be of interest to ratepayers that within the next twelve months Waiheke Island will be supplied with electricity," said the chairman. The engineer of the Auckland ElectricPower Board had informed the board that it was hoped to bring the supply from Maraetai to Waiheke before the Christmas holidays.
It was stated that a number of minor burglaries had occurred on the island recently, particularly at Onetangi. The number of complaints, however, had not been sufficient to warrant the appointment of a permanent constable.
A vote of thanks to Mr. 0. Butler, the St. John Ambulance officer on the island, was passed.
