LADIES' GOLF CONTEST
PLAY AT NEW PLYMOUTH MANY CLOSE MATCHES WANGANUI PAIRS IN FINAL [BY TELEC; If API I —OWN COKlt KSPOXDIONI'] NEW PLYMOUTH. Wednesday The quarter and semi finals of the New Zealand Ladies' Golf Union's autumn foursomes, which took place in showery weather to-day, were productive of some stern struggles and close finishes. New Plymouth pairs, who figured so prominently in the opening day, all met with defeat and two Wanganui pairs, Mrs. Russell Grace and her daughter, Mrs. Young, and Miss Currio and Miss Blythe, will contest the final to-morrow afternoon. Jn the quarter-finals Mrs. Grace and Mrs. Young had a comfortable win, but all others had to fight hard for victory. Misses P. and E. Blundell, although they did not produce the standard of golf they showed on the opening day, fought gamely against Misses Currio and Blythe, but the Wanganui pair were too steady over the return journey.
Airs. Quilliam and Mrs. Nicholson were one down with one to play against Mrs. Rich and Miss Home, but a missed putt by Miss Home enabled them to square the game and win on the 19th. Mrs. Waddell and Mrs. Fisher had an evenly-contested match with Mrs. Curtis and Miss Gavin, eventually winning at the 17th.
Both semi-finals were splendid contests, going right to the last green. The New Plymouth pair, Mrs. Quilliam and Mrs. Nicholson, gave Mrs. Grace and Mrs. Young a rare fight. The Wanganui pair were two up after playing the 11th, but then, with the aid of three strokes, their opponents took the next four holes in a row and stood two up with three to play. Mrs. Grace and her partner then staged a gallant •finish. Mistakes by their opponents enabled them to win the 16th and mainly through a grand spoon shot by Mrs. Young they squared the game at the next. A topped rlrive into the creek at the last hole spelt disaster to the New Plymouth pair's chances. Playing steady golf Misses Blythe and Currio were two up on Mrs. Waddell and Mrs. Fisher at the eighth, but the New Plymouth, pair took the next two and squared the game at the tenth. A fine recovery over the bunker by Miss Blythe enabled her sido to take the 12th, but they threw away this advantage by weak play on the green at the 14th. A stroke enabled Mrs. Waddell and Mrs. Fisher to halve the loth, but a well-played hole at the 17th saw the Wanganui pair dormv and a half at the last gave them the match.
