RANGITOTO ISLAND
* —Of* . RENTALS FOR SHACKS "I cannot agree that Rangitoto Island .should be preserved entirely for botanists," said Mr. H. F. W. Meilvle, chairman of the Rangitoto Island Dofhnin Board, at a meeting last night. "A recent public statement that the island was being commercialised I tbink was quite unjustified. There are only about 70 shacks on the island, the total area occupied being approximately 10 acres, while the whole domain comprises GOOO acres. In addition, the shackowners provide the best safeguard for the prevention of fire and wilful destruction of the bush." All - . E. Aldridge suggested that the statement that the island was being commercialised might Imve arisen out of the fact that a number of shackowners were letting their dwellings for substantial rentals, which was against the terms of tenure. It was to make inquiries and to take nation if necessary.
An application from the Boy Scouts' Association to light a bonfire on the summit of the island on the night of May 6 was refused, it being contended that the risk of the flames spreading to the bush was too great.
