SCHOOL CERTIFICATES

MINISTER DEFENDS SYSTEM I ' REPLY TO CRITICISM [BY TELEGRAFH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Friday A statement on the system of the 'school certificate examination was made to-day by the Minister of Education, the Hon. S. G. Smith, who said the opinions of the Associated Chambers of Commerce were based apparently on a misconception of the requirements of the examination.

It was obvious, he said, that little or no account had been taken of the regulation requiring a-candidate to have completed a three years' course of post primary education. There was no danger of over specialisation, even with commercial pupils. Specialisation to a degree contemplated by the chambers was prevented by the course laid down lor all Candidates for the school certificate examination, the requirements covering the holding of free places, the functions of schools and the good sense of teachers.
