April 20 One firemen and several hundred passengers by the underground railway were overcome by acrid smoke from a persistent fire in a Brooklyn waterfront warehouse to—day. Quantities of rubber, tar and ' paper were ignited and the flames, with repeated explosions and accumulated gases, defied the efforts of 400 firemen to extinguish them. Great follows of black smoke were sucked into the underground railway causing annoyance to thousands of passengers, while .it was necessary to remove hundreds, many of whom required hospital attention. The underground ventilating system carried the smoke for several miles through the tunnels and delayed transportation for several hours. In all eight alarms were sounded, bringing out 53 pieces of fire-fighting equipment. Six ambulances were kept busy for hours removing prostrate firemen, many of whom suffered serious burns.
