ELLERSLIE FROCKING

TAILORED SUITS VOGUE FASHIONS IN HATS DIFFICULT MODES A soft grey sky that only now and again opened to show the sun, and a warmth in the air that was almost reminiscent of summer, made Saturday, the opening day at Ellerslio, perfect for such an outing. So bright and beautiful were the grounds, with the flower beds and borders a mass of brilliant colouring that it was not surprising to see many peoplo wandering off between the races to admire their loveliness and that of the trees, just now showing the russet touch of autumn among "their leaves. The keynote of the dressing was simplicity and utility. There was a wonderfully comfortable air about the new winter coats, whether they were handsome fur-trimmed models or of heavy warm tweeds. Collars on the former were very deep and trimmed with either fur, Persian lamb or astrachan, but the sleeves as a general rule were free from fur and trimmed with the coat material only. Some of the tweed coats were most attractive and were made with double-breasted fronts and collars that could be worn either turned up or down. In quite a number of cases the two ends of the collar overlapped or else one was passed through a slot in the other end and fastened with a large bfitton. Rows of stitching trimmed some of these coats, stiffening and adorning collars, cuffs and pockets. Fancy weaves are still popular and •were to be seen in the diagonal stripes that were such a feature of last season's coats and frocks. Boucle apparently leads in popularity among the materials and was to be seen in frocks, suits, and coats, nearly always in monotones, with angora running it closely in favour. The tailored suit, trim and well-cut, was to be seen in many shades—in brown mixed tweeds, blue in an endless range of tones, green, and black. Vying with it in popularity was the ensemble suit, which seems to be perennial in its charm and attractiveness. Perhaps the greatest change of style was to be seen in the hats, many of which followed the Tyrolean mode, the pancake and the sliced effect. As a matter of fact, hats are much harder to wear this season than they have been for some time, and are rather apt, unless well chosen, to detract from the smartness of a suit or ensemble.

Among those present were Alvs. H. M.
