NELSON COLLEGE
QUESTION OF REBUILDING PERMANENCY ADVOCATED The question of the rebuilding of Kelson College, which was extensively damaged by earthquake in Juno, 1920. was discussed, at a recent Old Boys' Day gathering. It was stated that it might be necessary for tin* Board of Governors to accept the rebuilding of Nelson College in wood. That proposal was strongly criticised b'y several speakers, who urged that the old boys make every effort to see that the building was replaced by a permanent structure worthy of the school and its tradition. Mr. W. C. Harley, president of the Old Boys' Association, said there should be no compromise about the matter. If the old boys took it up and insisted or. a worthy permanent building thev 'should obtain their objective. The sum of £IOO,OOO was not to bo considered when the Dominion was reiving on quite a small number of such schools to produce those who were to control the destiny of the country in the future It would be ridiculous to build in wood. The department appeared ~-o refuse the admission of anything traditional or spiritual in education. Speaking of the disadvantages being experienced % present boys, Mr. Harley said that a> tradition could not be built around t;he present large gap on top of the terrace at the college. What would Oxford. Cambridge, and Harrow or htoii be if their buildings were i? demolished and replaced from time to "me, for the purpose of meeting | modern developments in sunshine or "under-the-trees classrooms y.QK bo rue other such things^ mMWCi ~
