VISIT TO NEW ZEALAND GENERAL SIR G. JEFFREYS Paying a short visit to the Dominion while on leave from India, Lieut.-Gen-eral Sir G. D. Jeffreys, General Officer Commanding the Southern Command in India, arrived by the Monowai from Sydney yesterday. He was accompanied by his wife, Viscountess Cantelupe, his son, Mr. C. J. D. Jeffreys, who acts ai his A.D.C., and Lady Mary Rose Jeffreys. Sir George and his party will be th« guests of the Governor-General, Lord Galway, in Wellington, and will spend the rest of their time in visiting the chief scenic attractions. Sir George served with the Grenadier Guards in tho Nile Expedition, during which hj« was at the Battle of Khartoum, and also in tho South African War. He was commandant of the Guards' Depot from 1911 to 1914, and at the outbreak of war was in the retreat from Mons with the Grenadier Guards, the Second Battalion of which he commanded in 1915. After acting as brigadier to several brigades, including the Ist Guards Brigade, he commanded the 19th Division from 1917 to 1919 While on the Rhine he was divisional commander of the Light Division. Sir George was in command of the Loudon District from 1920. to 1924, and his present command dates from 1932.
