KETCH MAHI BURNED
SPARKS FROM SCRUB FIRE VESSEL NOT IN SERVICE [BY TELEGBAPH —OWN COBBESPONDENT] OPOTIKI, Thursday The ketch Mahi, owned by Messrs. Skinner and Lane, of the East Coast, was totally destroyed by fire. Maoris were burning scrub not far from the beach where the boat was tied up. The wind was favourable when the scrub was lit, but it later veered and sparks fell on the boat, which, being built of dry timber, soon caught fire. Efforts to suppress the fire were in vain. The Mahi was a wooden auxiliary ketch of 15 tons gross. She was built at Auckland in 1902. The vessel was 38ft. in length by 13ft. in beam and had a 15 horse-power motor. The vessel was bought some few years ago in Auckland and for some time was used by Captain Lane for regular trips to Opotiki and down the coast, but it had not been used for a considerable time and no one was on board when the fire occurred. The vessel was insured in the Prudential Office.
