CITY WATER SUPPLY TWO ALTERNATIVE SCHEMES The question of obtaining an adequate water supply for Auckland was under consideration 50 years ago. Following is an extract from the New Zealand Herald of March 15. 18135: — "We understand that the Southern Wairoa Falls are in a beeline almost the same distance from Auckland as those at Nihotupu, while their outflow is stated to be double that of the latter stream. .. .. „ "Like Nihotupu, as a source of the proposed city water supply, the Southern Wairoa would be a gravitation scheme. As it is not proposed to officially inspect the falls until next summer there will be ample opportunity in the interval for the officers of the council to ascertain the data required, namely," quantity and quality of water, height above sea level and distance from town., "The margin of the stream, which is said to arise in the ranges trenching toward Paparata, is dotted with forest growth, so that in that respect all the suggested sources of water supply present the same features."
