DRAINAGE PROBLEM
TAUPIRI SWAMP AREA [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON. Thursday "No one thought two years ago that .we would be considering the blocking of drains and the installation of an irrigation system," said Mr. L. R. W. Reid, chairman of the Taupiri Drainage Board, at a meeting of the board to-day. Mr. Reid said the whole purpose of the board had been to free its area of water, but tho prolonged dry spell during the summer had emphasised the value of irrigation works Mr. J. M. Noble said there had been too much loss from peat lires 'in tho Tauhei district to warrant the board delaying the installation of flood-gates in the drains, in order to keep tho water level up during dry spells. Mr. Reid gave instances of the value of irrigation during tho recent dry weather, and strongly supported tho suggestion that flood-giftes should be provided. The board decided to obtain legal advice as to its powers in tho matter and to obtain information regarding tho prices and types of flood-gates.
