RUGBY FOOTBALL
MANUKAU ROVERS CLUB VERY SUCCESSFUL SEASON The report presented to a largelyattended meeting of the Manukau Rovers Rugby Football Club, expressed its pleasure that in every department of the club's activities members had acquitted themselves honorably, a fact that had materially tended to soften the disappointment in not winning the Auckland senior championship in the final match of last season. The club entered eleven teams in last year's Auckland Ilugby Union competitions, and all games were not only of a high standard, but all were played in the best spirit of the Rugby code.
The success of the senior A team was attributed to the coachin;; c[ L. K." Heazlewood and the attention given to combination and hard training. The final match against Grafton waß referred to as one of the greatest games of the season, and congratulations were extended to the Grafton Club on itß success. Congratulations were extended to the second grade team, which was also runner-up to Grafton. Of the sixth grade team, which lost only one game and won the championship, - the report predicted that many of its members had qualified for senior rank. Record wan made of the Benior team having won the Jordon Cup, and the sixth grade team th» Dodd Cup.
Representative honours were gained by soven Manukau players, L. K. Heazlewood, C. Pepper, T. Pearce, M. Poulton, W. Brimble, S. Kereopa and B. Constable, while M. McGee. I. Sutherland and G. Parks secured junior representative honours and C. Pepper gained the distinction of being the first Manukau player to be selected in the North Island team. Pleasure waß expressed at the appointment of Mr. V. R. Meredith as manager of the All Blacks, he being a former member of the cinb, and whose active career as a player could be traced back to 1893. Owing to a substantial increase in membership, the committee had effected considerable additions to the training facilities, including the enlargement of the pavilion, which now embraced committee, dressing, assembly, massage and canteen rooms as well as an indoor training area, ine official opening of the enlarged premises had been fixed for March 21, to be followed by n carnival. The treasurer, Mr.. R. T. Heighway, reported that the receipts amounted to £lB4 and the expenditure to £57, leaving a credit balance of j;127. The assets exceeded the liabilities by £231. Among those present were Messrs. H. Frost and T. W. Maben. chairman and respectively, of the Auckland Kugby Union. Mr. Frost congratulated the club on its foresight in erecting modern training quarters and its systematic coachi5 K i youas players. He also intimated his intention of retiring from the management committee of the Auckland RugDy Union. Mr. R. T. Heighway was elected a life member of the club. NORTH SHORE CLUB ELECTION OF NEW OFFICERS An action by playing members of the North Shore Rugby Football Club to introduce new life into 'the executive positions of the club at the annual meeting, caused breezy discussions', and gave the chairman, Mr. F. Retter, 1 difficulty in keeping order. A satisfactory , report and bal-ance-sheet were read and adopted, a credit balance of £lO being shown. " Considering that your rates in arrears have been paid and expensive repairs have been carried out to the training building during the past year I consider the position of the club is satisfactory," said .Mr. Retter. Discussion arose when it was asked whether the usual procedure of allowing new members to vote for the election of officers was to be adopted or not. A member of the club said that previous meetings had allowed new members to vote and. as rules had not been amended since the last annual meeting, he moved that standing orders be suspended and the election of new members bo proceeded with. The chairman, however, recorded • his vote against this. .
When asked to leave the chair by another, member, the chairman refused to receive'the motion, and the election was carried on until the nominations for the committee. It was then found that there were insufficient eligible members to elect the officials, eo, without further motions, the voting was thrown open and the constitution over-ruled. Although it took approximately two hours to elect the officers for the year, general business took about ten minutes • * r . . It was decided .to foster a junior boys team as an addition to the existing teams for the new season. . ■> ■■ The following officers were elected:—' Patron, Rear-Admiral Burges Watson; pre sident, Mr. H. F. W. Meikle: vice-cresi-denta, the .usual list, with the addition of Messrs. P. Upton, P. A. Syers (Frank ton); club captain. Mr. J. Owen: eecre tary, Mr. P. SOUTH AUCKLAND UNION NEW PLAN FOR SEASON [from our own correspondent] PUKEKOHE. Wednesday An entirely new plan of conducting Rugby football in tie South Auckland Union's territory, which at present extends from, Manurewa to Rangiriri, was approved at a meeting of the management committee of the union last evening. The plan is to be submitted to the incoming management committee. In the pasi the affiliated sub-unions— Manukau. Pukekohe, Waiuku, Franklin and Waikare—have held their club competition* and then fielded their representative teams, which have played each other under the jurisdiction of the South Auckland management committee for the South Auckland championship. Last evening, Mr. C. H. Jemison proposed that, the sub-unions start the club competitions not later than April 27, and that the last Saturclay in each succeeding month be reserved for the South Auckland competition. He pointed out that this would mean the selection of the representative teams early in the season and on© Saturday a month devoted to representative football. All club players would be kept in form throughout the season by playing at least three Saturdays each month, and incentive for .all to strive to gain a plac in the representative teams would be maintained. Under the old system, with club football practically over when the South Auckland competition started, there was little incentive to keep > in form, except in the case of those ,cho3en in the first plac© as representatives. , Mr. Jemison also included m the plan the holding of a knock-out competition at the end of the season for the champion club* of each sub-union, • ' Mr 'V. V. Fox seconded the motion tor the approval of the plan, which was carried unanimously , It was further agreed to recommend tnnt in the selection of teams to represent the South Auckland Union in matches with outside unions, the sub-union selectors submit names of players they consider worthy of a place in the South Auckland team. It was pointed out that this would make it unnecessary for the union's sole selector to see all the sub-union players in action. Considerable discussion was caused by an announcement by a Manukau delegate, Mr. H. C. Baulf, that at a conference the previous evening of Rugby enthusiasts in the Manukau Sub-Union's territory, which centres on Papakura, it had been decided that it would be in the best interests of Manukau to now link up direct with the Auckland Union, as the territory was now suburban, and quite a number of the Manukau players worked in the city. The meeting agreed to recommend the incoming management committee not to refuse Manukau a clearance to play iz» Auckland for the coming seat on.
