COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING HALF YEAR'S RATES PAID [by telegraph—own correspondent] { "WARKWORTH, "Wednesday The Rodney County Council mot to-day. The clerk reported that half the current year's rates had been paid to date. The expenditure to date is £23,147 and the receipts £23,008. The receipts from heavy traflic licences showed an increase of £2OO on thone of last year. The Public Works Department advised that it was about to proceed with the construction of one and a-half miles of construction on the upper Waiwera-Tahekeroa road as a relief work. The council is to contribute £SO, and the work is to be done by day labour.

The Labour Department advised that all available unemployed men were being sent to land development schemes, and that it could not state when men would be available to fill vacancies in the council's camp at Pukapuka. The tehder of the Roope Construction Company at £751 for the construction of the Wbangateau Bridge was accepted. An additional £192 will be required to cover the cost of piles, approaches, metalling and payment of a clerk of works.

The Main Highways Board advised that it had accepted a tender of £3142 for the construction of the Makaran Bridge, on the West Coast Road. Tenders for the construction oi: tho approaches would close shortly. It was decided to protest against the action of tho Government in not taking over the < obligation of local bodies' rates by the Mortgage Corporation. The committee appointed to consider a petition from settlers on tho West Coast Road asking that the Kaipara riding should include only those properties facing the West Coast lioad (the Port Albert-Kankapakapa main highway), reported that it had no recommendation to make.

Twenty-four applications were received for tho position of bridge foreman. The council selected three applicants, who are to be personally interviewed by a sub-committoe.
