ALTRUISTIC INCIDENTS
Sir, —There has recently been exhibited in our midst a very delightful and commendable spirit of altruism. 1 refer more particularly to the splendid gifts by Lord Nuffield and Mr. W R. Wilson to alleviate and sustain crippled children. There is no need for me to amplify the sense of grateful appreciation which is being manifested throughout the Dominion by all sympathetic souls for human suffering. But in connection with the crippled children may I be allowed to point out that such need was, some two years ago, recognised, and some provision to alleviajbe the like was made by the late Mr. H. S. Dadley, of Auckland. Then'there are the gifts by Lord Bledisloe and his persistent efforts to inculcate and implant an altruistic spirit among sections of our people, and especially among the* children of the Dominion. This reminds mo that many years ago, ir. a letter to the Zealand Herald, 1 suggested obtaining and preserving a series of phonographic addresses from prominent 'and distinguished personages living ' in, or visiting, Now Zealand..All such ! records would be of considerable his- ! toric value. Thoughts and things have j advanced find changed since then. I desire to represent that there is now made evident a spirit that niiffht warrant the revival of the idea lo the glory of God and the Enrichment of Man's Estate." Perhaps there is yet time, means and opportunity to get Bome delightful parting messages from Lord Bledisloe and Lord Nuffield and a kindlv expression of goodwill from Mr. W." R. Wilson, addressed to those I little ones. Those contributions might ' be made the nucleus of a collection ' of important and highly-interesting municipal records, that would be valued by the present and next generation, and serve a-s a means to keep our minds refreshed and our hearts attuned to ' the kindly deeds of those our benefactors.
