THE HARBOUR BRIDGE

BIRKENHEAD DISCUSSION BUSINESS IN COMMITTEE A letter was received by the Birkenhead Borough Council last night from tho Auckland Harbour Bridge Cpmpany forwarding a copy of the proposal made by the Mayors of the North Shore boroughs, and asking the council to support the scheme. The Mayor, Mr. G. Mills, moved that the letter'should bo considered in committee. Mr. J. Macdonald objected, stating that it had "become a regular performance of the Auckland Harbour Bridge Company of getting its business taken in committee." The Mayor said Mr. Macdonald would pr6bably change his attitude regarding the letter if he know its contents.

Mr. Macdonald: There is no "probably" about it, unless the company is prepared to forego its charter. The motion to consider the communication in committee was carried, Mr. Macdonald dissenting. Upon resuming in open council, it was reported that a motion by Mr. Macdonald, " That this council favours the repeal of the Auckland Harbour Bridge Empowering Act, and tho surrendering of th<j bridge charter to t»e Government," had been lost.
