DUTCH GRATITUDE

ALBURY "ON THE MAP" PROPOSED MEMORIAL According to the Mayor of Albury, New South Wales, Mr. Waugh, who returned lately from the Dutch East Indies, the Dutch regard Albury as the capital of Australia. Many working people and school children knew where to look for Albury on the map, but they had no idea where Canberra was situated.

A large proportion of the population of Holland knew little about Australia until the newspapers had described how the citizens of Albury saved the Dutch air race aeroplane from disaster, said Air. Waugh. He went to tho Dutch East Indies to thank the people of the Netherlands for their expressions of gratitude and to acknowledge gifts worth more than £IOOO which were sent to Albury citizens. Mr. Waugh said that he was given a wonderful reception. He was informed by the Prime Minister, Dr. Colijn, that a short history of Australia and the story of the air race incident at Albury would be incorporated in all school textbooks. Tho Governor-General Jonkheer, Dr. B. C. de Jonge, presented Alderman Waugh with the Order of tho Orange Nassau, which was conferred on him by the Queen of the Netherlands. There was a move in Holland, said Mr. Waugh, tp open a public subscription to erect a memorial at Albury to commemorate the landing of the Dutch airmen.
