SYDNEY TURF NEWS

NEW ZEALAND-BRED WINNERS NORMAN CONQUEST'S SURPRISE ([from our own correspondent! SYDNEY. Feb. 22 Norman Conquest and Love Song, winners of the principal handicaps at Warwick Farm on Saturday, were both bred in New Zealand. Norman Conquest, a hopeless outsider, was a benefit only for the bookmakers, but Love Song was very substantially supported. Norman Conquest led practically all the way in the sprint event, the Gienfield Handicap. He had the minimum weight, Bst., the race bohig a welter, and, although ridden right out ho was holding the opposition qnito decisively. Tho wet track have suited him, for tho Warwick 5 arm district had been flooded during the past week with tropical rains. Anyway, ho gave none of his pursuers a clianco over the final furlong. Croupier started in this event with 10.6, but cut an inglorious figure. Myra Tip, the light-framed sister to Closing Time, was a hot favourite, but she almost foil on a greasy patch three furlongs from home. She might easily have hurt herself, but escaped injury. The heavy track reduced the field in the principal handicap to five. The three-j carold liimond filly Limyris made a good attempt. to win all the way, but over the last 100 yards Love Song, hard ridden, pushed up on the insido and won going away. Last season's Metropolitan winner. Regal Son, struggled on with Ost.. but he did not impress, and apparently is not as good as he was. The Caulfield Cup winner. Journal, with 9.5. was produced in a mile event. Aided by a clear run on the rails over the last, three furlongs lie reached second place. As he looked very well this dashing effort suggested bright prospects again in the autumn. His two-year-old sister Silver Typo had her first outing in the juvenile event. She is a Very likely-looking filly, a silvery chestnut, and ft totally different, type from Journal. She wag very inexperienced, and missing the start beat only two or three home. D. 'Lewis won the two-year-old race for Mr. E. J. Watt with the Dorio colt Osculum. He is a solid bay and should go on to better things. The ex-New Zealand owner certainly has bright prospects for next season with young horses. The Raider, tho result of Valicare's visit to Night Raid in New Zealand, was a hot favourite for the second maiden handicap at Warwick Farm. Ho is now a gelding, but is still a. bit of a handful at tho barrier. He may win races, but his mother would hardly own him after Saturday's display. i
