DEATH OF SPORTSMAN

£ RUGBY AND TENNIS PLAYER The_ tragic death in a motor accident at Wellington last week of Edward Richard Ansell has resulted in the loss to the sporting ranks of Auckland, and Onehunga in particular, of a very promising athlete. While interested in swimming and wrestling, his main activities were divided between the Manuka u Rugby football and tennis clubs. Commencing his football career as a sixth grade player, Ansell gained steady promotion until last season he rose to senior status, and also earned distinction as an Auckland B representative. Ranked as first player in the tennis club, he also held the position of club captain.

A tribute to the popularity of the deceased was paid at his funeral on Saturday afternoon, which was attended by an exceptionally large number of people, representative of sporting and other interests. The service at the graveside was conducted by Rev. C. G. Scrirngeour, assisted by "Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P. At a short service held at his family's residence, Mr. H. Frost, chairman of the Auckland Rugby Union, paid a striking tribute to the manly qualities and athletic ability of the deceased.
