HARBOUR BRIDGE SCHEME
fciir, —I was very pleased to see that Hissi Worship the Mayor has at last ** sincerely interested himself in the harbou:r bridge scheme. It is surely time something was done, as the company has failed to accomplish anything during the four years sinc§ the charter wast granted. The company's promises extending over that time of "yqu will hear something within the next few days" has never yet been realised. One of our local members even offered to 6ta'ke his political reputation that the work would be started by February, 1934. But everything seems to be as much in the air as ever. If the Harbour Bridge Company refuses to hand over the charter, after four years of failure, then a very searching inquiry should be demanded into the affairs and prospects of success of this company. Thousands are crying out for some constructivts employment, which makes this not only a local, but a national question. Gbkathopes.
Sir, —The statements made from time to time during the past few years by the Harbour Bridge Company have convinced me that a successful issue by' the company is hopeless. The sooner the people interested recognise that the stumbling block is the Harbour Bridge Company, with its charter, the sooner the project will be brought within practical. politics. The stand taken by the Mayor and the Auckland City Council seems to me a common sense one. The can contribute nothing toward.'a successful issue. I believe pn3sent circumstances are favourable to' taking in hand this much-needed improvement, but until the local bodies interested. take the matter into their own hands, nothing will be done. " ' " Progress.
