FLOODS IN TARANAKI
BYRD* EXPEDITION RETURNS
Many outstanding events in the news of the past wee It are illustrated among the attractive variety of pictures published in this week's issue of The Weekly News, which is on sale to-day. Three full pages are included of special photographs in various Taranaki districts where torrential rainfall last Friday caused unprecedented 'flooding. Bridges, roads and embankments in the country were washed away, while the damage in Now Plymouth was considerable. Pictures of further flooding at Hokitika, South Island, are published on another page. The return of the Byrd Expedition after 14 months spent in the Antarctic is illustrated by a most interesting and varied selection of photographs on the centre double-page.
Other events of wide interest featured this week include activities of the Duke of Gloucester at Fiji, the wedding of Mi3s Bessie Gaisford, New Zealand's popular lady golf champion, and the Auckland and Masterton shows. Further pictures of individual stock champions at the Auckland Show are published in the farm pages of the letterpress section.
A special feature in the news section is a comprehensive article on modern life-saving, giving valuable information for treating cases of apparent drowning. The history of the development of Tutanui Station, Hawke's Bay, home of Major-General Sir Andrew Russell, forms the second of a series of articles on historic homes and holdings of the Dominion. An "inside" account of a baffling murder mystery, tho Warsop case, is given by ex-Chief-Inspector James Berrett, formerly of Scotland Yard. This article is the first of a series relating to unsolved crime mysteries.
In the, farming section a special representative contributes a commentary on the stock classes at the Auckland Show. Other items include a valuable review of farm routine practice during March. Methods of wall decoration with plastic paint and a description of Barbola work are specially dealt with in the women's pages. Also published are exclusive reviews on racing topics by "Archer" and "Spearmint," a short story, "Midnight Muddle," and instalments of two serials.
