PEPPER SPECULATION
QUESTION IN COMMONS RECEIVER'S -REPORT AWAITED LONDON, Feb. 25 In the House of Commons Mr. J. C. Wilmot (Labour—Fulham East), inquired whether, in view of the exceptional circumstances of the failure of James and Shakespeare, Limited, through pepper market speculating, and in view of the heavy losses incurred by innocent persons, and the public apprehension caused by the firm's speculations in commodities, a Government inquiry would be held into the recent attempted "cornering" of supplies. The Financial Secretary to the Treasury, Mr. Alfred Duff-Cooper, said that until the official receiver's report was obtained no further steps could be taken. Mr. Wilmot: Are you aware that this attitude creates the impression that the Government wishes to "hush up" the matter ? No answer was made.
