MISQUOTATIONS

INTERESTING LIST In compiling his collection of 276 misquotations Mr. Hesketh Pearson has not been prompted by any feeling of righteous indignation toward the misquoter. The task, he says, has been great fun. Complaints of misquoting are not always capable of justification. One authority has written: " When a great writer uses an ancient and anonymous saying he does not acquire its copyright; born of the folk, it belongs to the folk, and a> new form is ntit a variant, not a misquotation." Mr. Pearson would agree with that. In his own short but interesting preface he Bays that the large majority ol' misquotations are improvements on the original quotations. Everyone will not agree entirely with that, but there is nevertheless much truth in it. On the other hand there are many misquotations that are unpardonable. Mr. Pearson's book will help to correct these. The misquotations and the correct quotation, together with its source, are given in parallel columns and there is un adequate index.
