NORFOLK ISLAND NEWS

PROPOSED DAIRY FACTORY CO-OPERATIVE MOVEMENT The prospectus of a co-operative dairy factory at Norfolk Island has been issued. The authorised capital is £SOOO, in £1 shares. Only £IOOO is asked for at present. For every £] spent on construction, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia will give a free grant of pound for pound, up to £IOOO. Without a cool chamber, it is impossible to keep butter in condition on Norfolk Island in the summer. One dairyman, who normally makes about 301b. of butter a week, has to close until the cooler weather arrives. Even in these depressed times nearly £IBOO is sent to the mainland annually for butter, cheese and bacon. It is hoped to divert the greater part of this sum to the proposed factory. It is intended, at present, to concentrate on the production of butter only, and expand the business as results warrant. A. payment of 9d a lb. is anticipated. A satisfactory number of shares have been taken up. Sufficient dairymen have guaranteed supplies to make the factory a practical proposition.
