LARGE SHARK CAUGHT

AN' EXCITING ENCOUNTER MONSTER CHASING ELLS Two residents of Richmond, Nelson, on Monday last, secured at the head of the Waimea mudflat a very large shark. It was observed in a tidal creek chasing eels, and even as the fishermen approached, a large eel with the shark in hot pursuit rushed franctically out on to the bank, only to meet its end at other hands.

The tide, which had been very high, was running out rapidly, and the shark continued its search for prey unmindful of the shallowness of the water. However, it was successfully driven back with stones until escape was impossible, and then the fun began. Heavy blows across the snout —the vulnerable spot in a shark—with an iron bar did not have much effect owing to the water breaking the force of the blows. However, after about an hour's chase the monster weakened sufficiently for a. rope to be fastened to its tail, when it was triumphantly hauled ashore. The shark was found to contain four large eels each about four pounds in weight, one of them being actually alive. It was just over 9ft. 6in. in length and was estimated to weigh between 3001b. and 4001b.
