GUIDERS' CAMP-FIRE

AN INDOOR FUNCTION WORLD CHIEF ENTERTAINED f Owing to the rain last night, the arrangements for the guiders' camp-fire had again to be altered, and, instead of being held in the grounds of the residence of Mr. Walter F. Boyle, United States Consul, the gathering took place in the Overseas League rooms. The guest of the evening, Lady Baden-Powpll, World Chief Guide, was escorted into tho main clubroom by Miss Ruth Herrick, chief commissioner for New Zealand, where she was greeted with a Maori welcome by the assembled guiders. Red lamps hung around the walls of the room and an electric firo in the middle was used to give a realistic camp effect. Following the welcome from the guiders, camp-fire songs were sung and tableaux illustrating Maori legends were given, these including the legend of beating the sun to make the days longer, Maui fishing up the North and South Islands from the oqpan depths, and the story of Tutanekar- and Hinemoa. Maori action songs and poi dances were also performed with excellent effect.

An interesting talk on gui'le problems was afterward given by the Chief Guide, who also answered a number of questions by guiders. Mention was mado of the way in which guiding had been adopted by all the countries of the world, except Germany, Italy and Russia, and a brief outline given of tho way in which the movement came into existence. ~ Among others present were: —Mrs. R. J. 'Coates, provincial commissioner, Miss Burgin, commissioner for training, and about 120 guiders, some of whom had come from as far north as Kaitaia and as far south as Gisborne.
