FASTER AIR SERVICES
KINGSFORD SMITH'S PLEA THE TRANSTASMAN ROUTE SYDNEY, Feb. .8 Sir Charles Kimgsford Smith ■was the guest of honour yesterday at a luncheon of the Millions Club. He was paid a tribute as a national hero, and the greatest living aviator in the world. In the course of his response Sir Charles said Australia, should be satisfied no longer with machines that "tootled along" at 100 miles an hour. " j -n-ant to see machines here doing 200 milest an hour," he said. " Australia, with its vast distances and ideal weather, is most suitable for high speed long distance air lines." The trip from London to Melbourne should bo covered in five and a-half or six days and those in control of tho Empire air mail should aim at that objective with machines specially built for the service.
Furthermore, an air Knk between Australia and New Zealand had become a necessity. Sir Charles said he had been assured that the Dominion Government was ready to spend a considerable sum in installing modern direo* tional radio guides.
