GOOD LINES SELL WELL

DEMAND FOR SOUIHDOWNS

Fully 5000 sheep, including about 250 rams, were offered at the j.nnual sheen and ram fair held at the Westfield saleyards yesterday. The numbers were, below last year's totals and the smaller yardings resulted in keen competition for sheep and rams of oututanding quality. There was a decided safcrcity of the best-class aged ewes, while young ewes of good type and quality were also in the minority. The majority of the pens offered medium-qUality IiIKS and many buyers were unable to fill their requirements of good ewes. Wethers were also penned in numbers well under last year's figures. „

- The comparative dearth of good type, well-conditioned sheep stimulated competition and values were stated to bo a shade better than last year's prices. The top price for two-tooth ewes was 27s 9d for a line offerud on behalf of Mr. W. Burrill, of Papntoetoe. Satisfactory prices were also obtained for several other lines of thij same class. A good quality line offerocl by Mr. A. Collie, of Manurewa, realised 26s 6d, and a number on account of a Papatoetoe grazier brought 2£s 3d. Shorn lambs of good quality wero forward in limited numbers and sold freely up to 14s. Woolly lambs realised up to 14s i 6d.

Southdown rams were in keen demand and a choice line of over 50 from the Waikato topped the uale. The best individual price was 7fgi».. A line of fine quality Romney rams from Taihape also sold well, the best price being 6igns. Leicesters were offered in limited numbers and fair-quality rams realised up to 2sgns. GOOD DEMAND AT PUKEKOHE [from our own* correspondent] PUKEKO3E, Thursday There was a good demand for stock at to-day's sale conducted by Alfred Buckland and Sons, Limited, and tin bettor prices which ruled were attributed to the neoessity of farmers near Auckland buying more stock to keep, up to their contracts for city milk supply. Good dairy ours' brought up to £5 10s; other dairy cowu, £3 to £4 10s; best heifers, £4 to £5 as; (mailer heifers, £2 10s to £3 15s. Some really prime cow besf was penned and with good competition values were fully on a par with Westfield yesterday and showed a decided improvement on the company's last sale a fortnight «gt>. Extra heavy prime young cows and heifers made from £6 15s to £8 2s 6d for a lim -from Mr. F.
