GASOMETER DAMAGED
EMERGENCY AT WOODVILLE MAKESHIFT PLANT OPERATING [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION*] WELLINGTON, Tuesday The Woodville Borough Council's gas supply failed owing to the great heat of the sun on Sunday, causing the gasometer to rise above the safety position and strain a number of plates. A large quantity of gas, estimated at 13,000 ft., escaped, and for a time the town was without gas supply. Temporary repairs were effected and gas is now being pumped direct into the mains, while a large oil drum is being used as a gasometer, this really performing the function of a safety valve. Water from the tanks at the bottom of the gasometer is being drained off, and when this is completed the old gasometer will be restored to its foundations. There are several buckled plates to be straightened. The full restoration of the plant is expected within a fortnight. t
