FIFTY YEARS AGO
CONDITIONS OF MAIN ROADS REMOVING AN OBSTRUCTION Some idea of the conditions of arterial highways fifty years ago may be gauged from the following news item which appeared in the N Zealand Herald of February 6, 1885: " The Public Works Department are again conferring a great benefit 011 tn«i public, viz., by removing the dangerous rock which stuck up prominently right across the Great South Koad at tlie Harp of Erin. This rock was exceptionally dangerous, as from its position it was like leaping down a chasm to cr( ? sS it with a vehicle and to pull up hotel, while it was a perfect tyrant horses with heavy loads, and pernap more especially as approached from Panmure Road. "We feel assured there is n y traveller on the South l\oad or «" the Howick side but will be gr . tied and thankful to the Govern for taking the obstruction away. )( work will take two or three weeks.
