ROADS TO WATERFRONT
NEW CITY STREETS PROGRESS OF SCHEME Now that the building in Customs Street formerly occupied by Duthie Bridson, Limited, has been removed to make way for the widening of Commerce Street where it gives access to the old railway station site City Council workmen are preparing for the paving of the new roadway. Beneath the building there was a shallow basepient and this area is being raised to the permanent street level, filling to a depth of Bft. being required It is anticipated that the filling will take some time to consolidate and it is intended to put down a surface of bitumen to enable traffic to use the new roadway without delay. Later when the foundation has settled finally and traffic warrants the harder wearing surface the City Council will construct a concrete road. This extension of Commerce Street will give direct access to the waterfront from Fort Street, thus relieving Queen Street of much slow-moving traffic. A further st/eet connection between Fort and Quay Streets is to be opened when the extension of Gore Street across the old railway station site is completed by the removal of the building in Q.uav Street formerly occupied by Robertson Brothers, Limited, and an old iron workshop adjoining. The land upon which these buildings stand lias now passed into the hniuls of the council and when the compensation to be paid to the present owners and the Harbour Board has been determined a start will be made with the demolition of the buildings.
