LAND OF LAZY MEN
HARDWORKING WOMEN QUEER LIFE IN ALBANIA "A land of lazy men, hard-working women, and feuds," was the description of Albania given by Mr. John Creighton, formerly of the Royal Air Force, in a recent address to the Sydney Legacy Club.
Mr. Crcighton said that, with a companion, he was making a flight from England to Southern Kussia when he landed in a dry river bed in Albania. A diminutive shepherd showed them to the nearest village, where the airmen and the aeroplane became objects of curiosity. As they walked through the streets all windows and doors were shut and barred, the villagers apparently fearing that another feud had broken out. The landlord of the local hostel showed them into his mud house, and handed each of the strangers an egg. This gift they discovered later was a form of greeting and friendship. "During our stay in Albania," said Mr. Creighton, "we found the women always loaded like beasts of burden, while the men walked at the head, always armed with a gun. The Albanians hv* in a perpetual state of insecurity. There it i* a tooth for a tooth, a. death foi a death and the hunter hunted." ,
