DEATH AT 91 YEARS

VETERAN OF MAORI WAR OLD WHALING DAYS RECALLED [by TELEGRAPH OWN correspondent] GISBORNE, Monday The death lias occurred of Mr. Thomas Bartlett, one of the last links with the old whaling days at Mahia and Waikokopu. Mr. Bartlett, who was a survivor of the war with the Maoris and was at veteran of the South African War, died at Kopua, whore he had lived most of his life. He was born at Maraotaha, Poverty Bay, in 1844. As a boy he went to Mahia to work at the whaling station and had many thrilling experiences in the pursuit of whales. On the landing of To Kooti at Whareongaonga in 1868 Mr. Bartlett accompanied the expedition which set out to cut off the rebel leader from his destination. the TTrowcra country. He was present at the Paparatu engagement and also at the fighting at Waikaremoana and finally at Ngatapa. Mr. Bartlett received the Now Zealand War Medal.
