BYRD EXPEDITION

LOADING SUPPLY SHIPS NEW YORK. Feb. 1 A wireless message from the Byrd Antarctic expedition at Little America states: — Rear-Admiral Bryd's plan to reload the Bear of Oakland and the Jacob Ruppert failed to-day. The shifting icepack forced the Bear of Oakland to leave her moorings and return to open water. A channel 200 ft. wide had been cut through the ice, but before more than two tons of supplies had been loaded into the vessel from the tractors, the channel started to close in. Captain English withdrew the Bear of Oakland for fear she would be trapped, and moored her alongside the. Jacob Ruppert to recoal his ship. Rear - Admiral Byrd remarked: "There is no reason for concern. These high winds cannot last for ever."
