THE TROTTING TRACK

SOUND WORK AT EPSOM AUTO MACHINE'S SPRINT GOOD EFFORT BY ARABOND BY ABAYDOS Some very useful work was accomplished on the dirt track at Epsom on Saturday morning by horses engaged at the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting on February 16 and 20, and several candidates registered smart times when sprinted in the final stages of their tasks. The best performers were Auto Machine, Realty, Star Pronto, Arabond, lvewpie's Guy, Silver Watch, Prince Etawah and Patricia Bell. Kewpie's King (J. Gee) went away from the mile and a-half, followed at intervals by Kewpie'e Bond (K. Bell), two seconds, Kewpie'a Guy (W. Gee), four (seconds. Auto Machine (A. Brown), seven seconds, and Arabond (C. P. Gicsen), eight seconds, and in a good run home Arabond just shaded Auto Machine in 3.32. Arabond went fast in the early stages and with six furlongs covered took the lead from Kewpie's King and Kcwpie's Bond, who were just in front of Kewpie's Guy, with Auto Machine at the tail of the field. Arabond reached the mile in 2.24 and still had charge at the quarter post, where Kewpie'a Bond skipped, and Kewpio's Guy went after the leader, with Auto Machine moving up fast. Arabond hung on to win narrowly from the fastfinishing Auto Machine, with Kewpie's Guy close up, and Kewpie's King almost along, side her. Arabond did his work well, but took I.S to run the final half-mile. Auto Machine, who ran the mile and ahalf in 3.33 1-5, showed a return to form by sprinting the last half-mile in 1.6. He put plenty of dath into his effort and showed fine speed in the run from the home turn. Kewpie's Guy was not unduly bustled and paced smoothly to register 3.36 2-5, the Inst half in 1.8. Kewpie's King, who has not done a great deal of fast work, was not pressed in the last furlong, but he finished solidly to Tun 3.41. Realty and Star Pronto Realty (E. S. Groat) and Star Pronto (B. Dyer) were associated over a mile and a-qtiarter, finishing on terms in 2.54. Star Pronto was just in front of Realty at the end of six furlongs in 1.48 3-5, from where he quickened the pace. Realty ran up on the outside of Star Pronto nearing the home turn and finished alongside him, to run the last half-mile in 1.5. Realty put plenty of dash into his sprint and appears to be regaining his best form. Star Pronto, who was unhoppled. gave a very sound display and further demonstrated

his speed by coming home the last half in 1.5 2-5. He is working well, but has yet to prove himself a solid, racehorse. Nimbus (K. Morrison) was allotted a steady two miles. He ran the first mile at a 2.30 gait and improved to 2.22 4-5 in tlve second. He paced resolutely and finished full of running to register 1.8 4-5 for the final half-mile. Manna's Son (E. S. Groat) trotted a mile and a-half in 3.39. He began quickly, but was steadied fpr a few furlongs, when he hit out again' in bold fashion. H'e ran the last mile in 2.24, maintaining an even rate throughout. Manna's Son is standing up to his work well and should soon be back to his best form. Mountain Plight (R. Saunders, lun.) worked two miles at a steady pace, running the last six furlongs at a 2.35 gait. The three-year-old is settling down to her work and making satisfactory progress. _ Patricia Bell (D. Cook) finished in front of Autumn Lou (G. Stubbs) at the end of a mile and n-half in 3.38. Autumn Lou did not begin too well and Patricia Bell was eased to allow the trotter to find her feet. The paco was increased at the end of five furlongs. Patricia Bell,_ pacing resolutely, came away in the straight to win nicely after running the last half-mile in 1.9 4-5. Work in company is improving Patricia Bell, who should make further improvement with racing Autumn Lou trotted evenly in the final stages, but still lacks solidness in the early part.

Silver Watch Pleases Tinoltaha (W. Brain) and Silver "Watch (L. Mahoney), assisted by a galloping pacemaker (J. Mahoney), were associated over a sound mile and a-half. Silver Watch finishing well clear in 3.29 3-5. Tinokaha made play to the mile in 2.22, where Silver Watch moved up, and they stepped along the next quarter at a merry speed. Once in the straight Silver Watch drew away to complete the last half in 1.8 1-5. Tinokatia took 3.32 1-5 for the full journey. Young Rodney (G. Paton) and Audo Patch (C. G. Lee) jumped off from the two miles, but were eased up after going a mile and a-half in 3.37 2-5. Keeping together, they trotted the first half in 1.12, and there was nothing between them at the mil© in 2.24 2-5. Rounding the home turn Audo Patch gained a little on his companion and, although Young Rodney finished gamely, he could not quite reach Audo Patch, who ran the last half in 1.13. Both trotters gave a sound display and are making steady proKr prince Etawah (R. A. Shepherd) worked a mile and a-quarter in 2.59. lie paced lazilv in the early stages, taking 1.51 1-5 to .reach the six furlongs, but was urged along in the final stages to run the last half ill 1.7 4-5. Prince Etawah. who is still a trifle robust, infused some dash into his finishing eijort. The Nelson Bincen gelding (N. Cunningham) "paced usefully over a mile and a-half at a 2.24 gait, coming over the last half a shade better than 1.10. He is showing some improvement and may do better when he gets racing experience. ' ; Direct Line (G. Paton) and Great Jjurlit (W. Fleming) were associated over three circuits nnd, "without being naked a serious question, went at a 2.30 gait for ' the last lap. Great Light, a three-year-old by Great Parrish—Coal Light, pneed attractively, while Direct Line also went solidly. Win Huon (C. Cr. Lee) was worked over two miles, but there was not much pace on until he "was ioin»d by Worthy Jvor (P. Maddocks) on the final vound, and they ran home the five furlongs at n 2.28. gait. Win Huon trotted boldly, when the_ pace was increased and lie is assuming better shape. Worthy Nor was sent an extra I'outvt at. an easy clip and. paced very smoothly. She is shaping up nicely and works freely, either with the straps or free-legged. EGMONT SUMMER MEETING WEIGHTS FOR. FIRST DAY [BY TEW.GRAPH—PUKBS ASSOCIATION] WANGANUI.
