MATAMATA SUCCESS

LARGE WIN DIVIDEND HACK CUP TO BARN DANCE HAMPTON PARK VICTORIOUS The outstanding feature of the Matamata Racing Club's meeting on Saturday was the surprise victory of the two-year-old King Flig;ht in the Putaruru Stakes. .King Flight was having his first race and returned a dividend of over three-quarters of a century on the win totalisator, on which there was only £8 invested on his chance, and he was tho outsider of the field bar one. The winners of the other races were ail solidly supported with the exception of Miss Lu, who paid double figures for a win. The Matamata Hack Cup proved easy for the each-way favourite Barn Dance, who led throughout. At one stage he was out fully eight lengths clear of the f;eld, and, after being eased in the middle stages, he was going away again at the finish. liarn Dance was ridden by the apprentice G. Cameron, who has been having; a good deal of success lately. The open sprint, the Waharoa Handicap, attracted only four runners and was won by the third fancy, Hampton Park, who won the event last year. The favourite, Lia Fail, a most promis-

ing mare, dropped dead in the race. The weather was fine and hot at the commencement of racing, but rain , began to fall, before the fifth race and made conditions somewhat unpleasant, although it was not heavy enough to have any serious effect. Apparently the course was just on the fringe of a storm, which was in,tem;« in the surrounding districts, which experienced a heavy downpouif. The attendance was well up to the average, and the totaliBator handled £12,695 10s, compared with £11,869 last year, an increaso of £826 10s. Sl Results:—-
