BALL ON MONOWAI

FANCY-DRESS CARNIVAL FINAL EVENT OF CRUISE The most festive occasion on the Union Steamsllip Company's liner Monowai during the course of its northern summer cruise . was un- ! doubtedly the fancy-dress ball, which took place 011 Thursday evening. The night was calm and warm, a condition which made dancing 011 deck very pleasurable, and all tho passengers as well as the officers entered wholeheartedly into the fun. The decks were hung; with flags between which could bo seen glimpses of a black sky broken only here and there by lights from a few residences in Port Fitzrpy. Practically all the passengers and officers wore fancy dress, many of which were made on board ship and showed surprising ingenuity and originality. Those who took part in the grand parade marched three times round the deck to the accompaniment of music supplied by the ship's band, after which dancing took place. The sudden entry of six officers representing "Roman Scandals," complete with horse and chariot, caused an uproar of laughter and a hasty dispersal of the passengers out of the way' of the high-spirited "horse." Adam and Eve, tho latter bowed down under the weight of masses of unruly hair made of string, Mae West under whose paint and powder could just be recognised the face of a popular officer, and a decidedly absentminded minister, were but a few of the very original and amusing costumes chosen. Others tended more toward elaborate costumes and in this section Eastern dress and early English modes were displayed in some very striking garments. After a brief interval following the grand parade, the prizes were presented by Captain A. H. Davey, the judges being Mrs. D. B. Patterson, Mrs. E. Pye-Smith and Miss E.. Bentley. The prize-winners were: —Best costume made on board (ladies), Miss Ruby Ross as Britannia; best costume made on board (gentleman), Mr. S. E. Manly as henpecked husband; best costume brought on board (ladies), fttrs. Ruthven as an Eastern lady; best costume brought on board (gentleman), Mr. E.
